MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA — President of Muhammadiyah Haedar Nashir emphasized the significance of maintaining ukhuwah (brotherhood). Surah Ali Imran verse 103 tells us not to be divided. In Jahiliyah period, Bani Aus and Khazraj dwelling Madinah fought for decades. Then, Rasullullah reconciled them.
Haedar required Muslims to avert causes of the fight. Division often occurs due to vested interest or group interest. In fact, egoism should be avoided.
“That’s possible that we, as humans, have interest. However, if it exceeds what it’s supposed to be. It’s excessive hubbud dunya (love for the world) so that an individual or a group of people will see other people’s interest as a threat,” he conveyed in the gathering conducted by Muhammadiyah Regional Board of Aceh on Sunday (6/5).
Egoism is regarding not only money and power but also worship. Haedar regretted some people refused the construction of a mosque whereas they often shout about unity, but it became only a slogan.
“The ones, who weren’t allowed the mosque construction, promote ukhuwah (brotherhood) because of our religion, our nation, and humanity. However, when we have interest, everything, including worship and the worship place, is problematized,” criticized Haedar.
The incident is a test for Muslims whether or not they can maintain ukhuwah. If there’s disagreement due to differences, make settlement. Haedar expected that the broken brotherhood can be fixed.
“To mend the broken brotherhood requires people to put their ego, interest, and worldliness aside. Muhammadiyah should promote and implement ukhuwah. Thus, Insya Allah, we’ll always do it,” expressed Haedar.
