MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA – When Umar bin Khattab succeeded in liberating Jerusalem, he published al-Uhdah al-Umariyah which contained guarantees of religious freedom for all residents of Aelia (another name for Jerusalem). According to Haedar Nashir, the history indicates that Palestinian issue has something to do with Islam.
“In 644 C.E., Umar bin Khattab expanded the Islamic area where Palestine became part of the Islamic world. Since then, Palestine has adhered to and been inseparable from the Islamic world,” stated President of Muhammadiyah Haedar Nashir in a discussion organized by the Postgraduate Program of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) on Monday (24/5).
Besides, the Al-Aqsa Mosque is the holy place for Muslims. It’s mentioned on Surah Al-Isra verse 1 telling isra mi’raj.
“Thus, it’s true that the Palestinian issue is related to Islamic teachings based on the historical perspective and the location of the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Indeed, the mosque becomes the soul and life of Muslims,” conveyed Haedar.
Haedar, a professor at the UMY, asserted plaguing the Al-Aqsa Mosque will always become a religious issue. Nevertheless, the conflict resolutions belong to an area of ijtihad.
“If Muslims make large protests, no one may misunderstand them because of the history that the Al-Aqsa Mosque is the pulse of Islamic life, and Palestine has become part of the Islamic world since the era of Umar bin Khattab,” he emphasized.
