MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA — Indonesia declared its independence seventy-six years ago. All Indonesians should be grateful for the blessing. On behalf of Muhamadiyah, President of Muhammadiyah Haedar Nashir congratulated on the 76th Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia.
The independence was the grace of Allah the Almighty and a result of the struggles of all Indonesian people. The proclamation was not only to declare independence from the occupation of other countries but also to realize a national life, which is united, sovereign, just, and prosperous.
Indonesia and all nations in the world are now confronting the COVID-19 pandemic. Many people are exposed to the virus and passed away. Thus, the best commemoration of the 76th Independence is to do humanitarian work to tackle the pandemic and help the COVID-19-affected people.
“The spirit of unity should be our first milestone to solve issues in this nation and to determine the future of this nation. Alhamdulillah, we are united in Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (Unity in Diversity),” Haedar said on Sunday (15/8).
Indonesian people have to be cautious about aspects rendering division of this nation, particularly from social media. Different political views and interests are two aspects that may likely divide this nation. The 76th independence day can be momentum to reinforce unity.
“We have to learn from history. A big country can be divided or no longer exist because of division,” Haedar said.
Indonesia with all its diversity and abundance of natural resources will only be a country with conflicts and divisions if all elements of this nation don’t maintain unity. Haedar encouraged the people to eliminate all potential that causes the division of this nation.
“We have to combat all hatred, intolerance, and all aspects which divide us as a nation. Different political views are supposed to be done when the political contestations were over. Don’t prolong it into a political grudge which will damage the spirit of unity,” Haedar said.
All the nation’s elites are expected to become true statesmen and role models for this nation in talking and doing. They have to consider wisdom when making decisions that bring huge impacts on many people to avoid division.
“We believe having been independent for 76 years leads us to be a more developed nation and mature elites. Let’s internalize the values of Pancasila, the constitution, and the history of this nation. We could achieve our independence because this nation was united to fight against colonialism,” Haedar said.
On the 76th Independence Day, Haedar hoped Indonesia become a progressive nation that can manage not only natural and human resources but also religious potential in unity. For one reason, none of the countries become developed over the division.
“None of the countries are developed with damaged nature and weak human resources. Thus, we have to take actions to make Indonesia developed, united, sovereign, just, and prosperous,” Haedar said.
