MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA—Muhammadiyah has evolved Islamic cosmopolitanism to development of universal humanity. According to President of Muhammadiyah Haedar Nashir, cosmopolitanism is awareness of world citizens to transcend ethnic, class, national and religious barriers.
“Cosmopolitanism morally engages universal humanitarian solidarity and responsibility regardless of primordial and conventional differences and distances,” revealed Haedar.
Cooperation of this movement with national and international parties show Muhammadiyah cosmopolitanism. Humanitarian aids of Muhammadiyah to Palestine, Rohingya, the Philippines, and others demonstrate that Muhammadiyah has become a link of universal and cosmopolitan Islamic insights.
“Islamic cosmopolitanism has been historical part of Muhammadiyah, and it should also become part of Islamic modernism and reform. Muhammadiyah is well-known as the reformist and modernist movement. It’s because of relations with this nation and other nations,” he explained.
Muhammadiyah should play active roles in this cosmopolitan world as integral part of the world citizens and should commit to disseminating enlightening actions as having dialog with Islam and the West to diminish the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
“Dialog is a key to create international peace. I think neocolonial counties, which do military aggressions such as the Israeli military aggression against Palestine, have lost their universalism and considered the world belongs to them,” asserted Haedar.
The world will be wrecked if a country or an individual is greedy and expand colonialization. Neocolonialism may not exist today. Thus, Haedar urged all people to broaden their ethic- and global wisdom-based horizon.
He regarded the new world order requires dialog, collaboration, alliances, and coexistence among civilizations. Muhammadiyah views that global civilization is required to always have dialog with local culture so that it does not get trapped in neocolonialism.
