MUHAMMADIYAH.ID, JAKARTA – Amar makruf nahi munkar (commanding the good, forbidding the evil) cannot be performed through munkar (evil) ways but makruf (good) ways.
President of Muhammadiyah Haedar Nashir quoted Surah An-Nahl verse 125, meaning “invite all to the Way of your Lord with wisdom and kind advice, and only debate with them in the best manner.”
“Muhammadiyah people have to talk and do based on knowledge or science. We may not speculate and talk nonsense because other people believe we’re pioneers,” Haedar said in the online forum conducted by the Cultural Arts and Sports Office on Friday (22/8).
“Therefore, Muhammadiyah people should be more creative, more proficient, smarter, and wiser to perform da’wah and give arguments,” Haedar said.
When debating, Muhammadiyah people should debate beautifully, properly, and accurately (billati hiya ahsan). They also have to bil hikmah or have the ability in combining nash (Quran and sunnah) and mind. They should have the characters when facing groups of people from different backgrounds and religions.
“If we disagree with secularists, liberals, or atheists, we have to have stronger better arguments. Thus, we can neglect their ideas and tell Islam above secularism, liberalism, and atheism,” Haedar said.
“Otherwise, when we debate conservatives who stand with their stupidity, dogmatism, and archaic attitudes, we have to talk to them beautifully, properly, and accurately (billati hiya ahsan),” Haedar said.
