MUHAMMADIYAH.OR.ID, YOGYAKARTA— President of Muhammadiyah Haedar Nashir revealed Islam is a religion having visions of universalism and cosmopolitanism. Mentioned in QS. Al-Hujurat verse 13, Allah has created male and female and made you people and tribes that you may know one another.
“The verse shows that cosmopolitanism, globalism, and universalism are in line with Islam. Thus, we, Indonesian Muslims, and Muhammadiyah people should have universal and global insights as well as universal humanity. Nevertheless, we have to remain down to earth and love this nation,” declared Haedar on Sunday (20/6).
Islamic teachings and universalism aren’t a contradiction. Indeed, Muslims may not be chauvinistic and myopic. They may not think that other nations is worse than our nation. Quoting the first president of Indonesia, Soekarno, affirmed that Indonesia might not feel more noble than other nations.
Islam comes to be a mercy to the whole world. “We have sent you ˹O Prophet˺ only as a mercy for the whole world” (Al-Anbya: 107). However, many Muslims cannot grasp and implement values and teachings of Islam as rahmatan lil ‘alamin (a mercy to the whole world).
“Being a mercy to the world refers to our relations to not only other nations but also nature. We may not destroy the nature and the earth. That’s the implementation of rahmatan lil ‘alamin,” explained Haedar.
Prophet Muhammad applied universalism of Islam by sending diplomats to convey Islamic da’wa to leaders around the world as Najash in Habasyah (Ethiopia), Hiraclius the Roman leader (Roa), Kisra the leader of Persia (Iran), Muqauqis in Egypt, and others.
“Umar bin Khattab and the other caliphs after him, then, followed what Prophet did so that Islam become a cosmopolitan religion having universal values. In one side, Islam has its characteristic, and in the other side Islam have international relations within diversity,” stated Haedar.
