MUHAMMADIYAH,OR,ID, YOGYAKARTA – Islam has vivid references regarding silaturahmi (brotherhood). One of them is mentioned on Surah Ali Imran verse 103, “And hold firmly to the rope (i.e. the Covenant of Allah = the Qur’an) of Allah all together and do not become divided. And remember the favor of Allah upon you – when you were enemies and He brought your hearts together and you became, by His favor, brothers. And you were on the edge of a pit of the Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus does Allah make clear to you His verses that you may be guided.”
President of Muhammadiyah Haedar Nashir asserted that the verse requires us to maintain our brotherhood and not to be divided.
We have to be aware of disturbance which ruins ukhuwah (brotherhood). Surah Al-Hujurat verse 10 states “The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers And fear Allah that you may receive mercy.” On the previous verse (Al-Hujurat verse 9), Allah tells us “And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make settlement between the two. But if one of them oppresses the other, then fight against the one that oppresses until it returns to the ordinance of Allah. And if it returns, then make settlement between them in justice and act justly. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.”
It’s possible that we may disagree one another; indeed, we are humans who have different ethnicity, race, class, and views. However, Allah reminds us that the fight may not be perpetual.
“We may not exaggerate the fight, but we have to deminish it. We have to stick together to fight for humanity and implement al-ukhuwah al basyariyah (one of the brotherhood concepts),” declared Haedar.
